Carnival 2008 (updated!)
Thanks to everyone who helped to participate in Generate Generations, Zion Carnival in a Week and the Caribbean Carnival Procession.
The theme of the float was the Sangofa bird which looks at the past in order to be able to look to the future, and understand the present as well. It is a West African mythical bird, and a very important thing for all communities to do - in understanding our roots to have positive futures.
We had a great pre-carnival showcase funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and assisted by the Co-operative Fund with many generations of the community coming together for a night of arts, oral histories, fashion shows and inspiring words from Angela Lawrence of Mothers Against Violence, Erinma Bell (MBE) from Carisma, Peddy Herbert (international carnival costume designer) and the Mapping our Lives Community Elders.
There will soon be some photos in the photo section of the pre-carnival event and the actual procession with the Manchester young people and a partner youth arts group, Art Locates Me, from Cumbria. Please pop back by end of November and the gallery will be fully up and running!
