-Generate Generations a brief introduction (and please see below for more information about the summer programme)

Generate Generations is a project for 11 to 18 year olds to take part in, in school/college holidays.

Most of all it is about a journey of exploration and giving you the chance to learn what YOU are interested in – about African heritage and culture and how that fits in with the rest of the world and  your roots.  Lots of studies around the world, including here in Manchester have shown that people don't feel they learn enough about other countries and their heritages.  Some things that are important that many of us talk about are that:

Africa is the birthplace of civilisation

Africa is not just about slavery, or poverty

Ancient Africa has the roots of much knowledge that could help the way we live today

The movement of peoples from Africa is one of the most interesting migrations in history

African arts and culture have impacted into what we understand as urban arts and cultural activities - like carnivals

These are just a few statements that can be applied to Africa - - and we want to hear what you think and what you would like to know more about.  Then, in 3 teams you will be given a budget that you organise yourselves to find out about Africa, the way it interests you, with some help from us.

The final prize ceremoney, perforrmance and exhibition will coincide with Caribbean Carnival  16th and 17th August, with prizes including places on exchange trips to Brazil and Africa.

The project runs over Easter holidays, May half-term and the Summer holidays and it is in various locations around South and Central Manchester.

GENERATE GENERATIONS- summer outline (and see other link for the summer key dates)

There are two teams-

The Young Khemets (more MC based)

and

Culturally Combined (more street dance based)

In the afternoons you work with your team to make the best performance pieces, films, exhibitions and radio shows.

Each team gets £1000 to spend on their research trip to London.   You will be receiving the conditions of this on Thursday 24th July.

There are outings to Manchester University, Liverpool and London

Each team gets points for attendance, going to extra sessions, completing exhibition pieces and perfromance pieces for our show on August 15th and completion of oral history films. You also get points for the best research and for spending your money wisely on the London trip. Only one team will win the group prize.   There are also some special prizes on national and international youth exchanges for over 13s.  The first exchange is to Cumbria on the last week of the summer holidays.

Graduation

There are limited spaces for graduation on the programme - and you qualify if you get enough points through attendance and input into sessions.  You need to sign a form to say if you wish to attend graduation or not. The graduation ceremony will be part of the exhibition and performance night on 15th August

Exhibition and Performance

You are taking part in an important performance at Zion Arts Centre on 15th August as a launch to carnival.  There will be quite a lot of important people there, and the prize winners will be announced.

You will perform a play, screen your films, take part in a fashion show, perform your tracks/dances as part of a large community event - -shortly we will be giving you a piece of paper to take home so that your parents/relatives etc can book tickets.

Carnival

You have the opportunity to take part in the Zion Carnival Procession from Hulme to Alexandra Park on 16th July.  Also you can audition to perform on the Main Youth Stage at Carnival on 17th July.  Auditions are on the week of the 4th August - and you need to fit these in around the outings to London and Liverpool.
